REVIEW: Around the World in 80 Days-ish – York Theatre Royal

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending York Theatre Royal’s latest summer production, “Around The World in 80 Days-Ish,” which promises a delightful circus-themed reimagining of the classic Jules Verne tale. Directed and adapted by Juliet Forster, this production runs until August 3rd, offering a unique experience that blends adventure, humour, and acrobatics.

As we entered the theatre, the stage was set with a big top tent, transporting the audience into a world of whimsical circus acts and high-stakes travel. This production, having toured post-COVID, now returns to its home ground with a fresh cast and new script tweaks, aiming to captivate both new audiences and returning fans.

Forster’s adaptation introduces a fascinating twist by bringing the real-life character of Nellie Bly into the fictional journey of Phileas Fogg. Bly, an investigative journalist who actually circumnavigated the globe in less time than Verne’s fictional hero, is pitted against Fogg in a race around the world. This addition not only modernises the story but also shines a spotlight on a remarkable yet often overlooked historical figure.

Kiefer Moriarty commands the stage as both The Ringmaster and Phileas Fogg, balancing his dual roles with charisma and precision. Maria Gray portrays Nellie Bly with a spirited determination, bringing depth and authenticity to her character. The supporting cast, including Ambika Sharma as Aouda, David Abecassis as Passepartout, and Rowan Armitt-Brewster as Detective Fix, each bring their own flair to the performance, showcasing a range of talents from aerial feats to clownish antics.

The production is a visual feast, with inventive set designs and vibrant costumes that evoke the thrill of a circus. Whilst the acrobatic stunts and aerial performances were fairly muted/tame compared to a Cirque Du Soleil-esque show, the did add an extra layer of excitement to the narrative. The choreography is tight and energetic, ensuring that there is never a dull moment on stage.

However, while the show is undeniably entertaining, I found myself grappling with the question of its intended audience. The circus elements and slapstick humour suggest a family-friendly spectacle, but we had children around us of around 7/8 years old that just weren’t hooked, fidgeting throughout. The show is billed as 7+ but at 2.5 hours in length, and long periods of storytelling without much action, this ambiguity could leave some viewers uncertain about whether the production is best suited for children or adults.

Despite this, “Around The World in 80 Days-Ish” is a commendable effort by York Theatre Royal. It offers a joyous, high-energy retelling of a beloved classic, filled with laughter and spectacle. The innovative blend of fact and fiction, combined with the dynamic performances and acrobatic skills of the cast, makes for an evening of theatre that is both engaging and memorable.

For those looking to embark on a theatrical adventure this summer, “Around The World in 80 Days-Ish” is certainly worth the journey. Just be prepared for a ride that is as unpredictable as it is entertaining. Tickets are available through the York Theatre Royal box office, and I encourage you to experience this unique production before it sets sail on August 3rd.
