REVIEW: overpass – Take It Or Leave It

When overpass emerged from Birmingham’s thriving indie scene, they brought with them a sound that resonated with both local audiences. Now, with their forthcoming EP Dependent set to drop on 28th February 2025, overpass’ latest single, Take It Or Leave It, delivers a defining moment for the band. It’s my favourite track from the trio of singles released so far (Be Good to Yourself and Like No Other being the others), and here’s why it deserves a spot on every indie playlist right now.

From the very first note, Take It Or Leave It puts you in a soundscape that is exactly what we’ve come to expect from overpass. The soaring guitar riffs, punctuated by Jake Bishop’s rhythmic drumming, lay a perfect foundation for Max Newy’s compelling vocals. There’s a raw, almost palpable energy that runs through the track, capturing the anthemic vibe of the band’s influences like Editors, while still retaining the modern edge of 2020s UK indie rock.

What sets Take It Or Leave It apart from its predecessors is the precision in its execution. Unlike Be Good to Yourself, which leaned heavily on a driving beat, or Like No Other, which explored softer melodic elements, this track strikes a perfect balance between grit and grace. overpass has managed to elevate their sound while maintaining the authenticity that initially drew fans to their music.

It’s a bold step forward that feels less like a departure and more like a culmination of the lessons learned from their earlier work. The result is a track that hits harder, resonates deeper, and lingers longer.

To fully appreciate Take It Or Leave It, it’s important to understand where Overpass has come from. Their debut EP, From the Night, established them as a band with a knack for creating arena-ready indie rock. But fast forward to Dependent, and it’s clear the band has grown both musically and thematically. Where From the Night introduced Overpass as an exciting new act, Dependent, so far, solidifies them as a force to be reckoned with in the indie music scene.

There’s a reason Take It Or Leave It stands out as my favourite overpass track to date. It encapsulates everything that makes the band special, unapologetically anthemic music, introspective and easy to learn lyrics, and a sound that feels both familiar and fresh. This track not only elevates overpass’s releases so far but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting year for the band.

As they prepare to release Dependent, overpass has shown that they’re not just another indie band. With Take It Or Leave It, they’ve given us a glimpse of what’s to come, and it’s bloody exciting.

As the buzz around the February release of Dependent continues to gain momentum, overpass are gearing up for an ambitious headline tour in spring 2025. For fans, this is an opportunity to experience their electrifying live performances.
