Sam Fender brought his People Watching tour to Leeds Arena on 4th December, and what a night it was. Packed with heartfelt moments, stunning production, and a setlist that had something for everyone, this was the kind of gig that stays with you. Critics on social media might have had their complaints about ticket prices or set length, but they were missing the point. This was more than value for money – it was an arena masterclass.
Songs That Hit Home
From the opening chords of “The Kitchen”, the energy was electric. Fender eased into the set with confidence, letting his music do the talking. Early favourites like “Getting Started” and “The Borders” brought that perfect mix of emotion and grit that fans have come to expect.
The newer songs were a real standout. “People Watching”, a track from the upcoming third album, felt like it had been around for years. The crowd sang it back to him with as much passion as the big hitters like “Seventeen Going Under”. To see a song that new resonate so deeply was a real highlight.
And then there was “Wild Long Lie”, making its second outing. Dreamy and powerful, it showed a different side to Fender’s songwriting. He also treated us to “Nostalgia’s Lie” and “Arms Length”, both fresh cuts from the next album. These tracks were met with huge cheers – proof that fans are eager for the next chapter in his music.
Of course, the night wouldn’t have been complete without “The Dying Light”. Fender skipped it on the first night of the tour in Dublin, but the uproar on social media clearly reached him. When he played it in Leeds, the arena lit up. A sea of voices joined him for this emotional masterpiece, and it felt like a thank-you to his fans for sticking with him.
A Show for the Senses
Fender didn’t just sound incredible – he put on a show that will be hard to forget. The stage design and visuals were something else. Giant screens displayed cinematic backdrops that matched the songs perfectly, and the pyrotechnics were breathtaking. By the time fireworks erupted during the encore, the crowd was left stunned. It’s not often you see that level of production indoors – it was arena rock on another level.
Silence the Critics
Let’s talk about the naysayers. Some people have been grumbling about ticket prices and the length of the set, but honestly, they’ve got it wrong. At just over 90 minutes, Fender delivered a compact, tightly curated set that packed a punch from start to finish. With 16 tracks spanning massive anthems, emotional ballads, and fresh material, it felt like a perfect balance.
Those complaining online clearly haven’t been or seen the show. For the rest of us, it was more than worth every penny.
A Night to Remember
The final stretch of the gig was pure magic. “Get You Down”, “Spit of You”, “The Dying Light” and “Seventeen Going Under” had the whole arena singing every word. And when Fender closed with “Hypersonic Missiles”, it felt like the roof might actually come off.
Sam Fender showed why he’s one of the most exciting artists in British music right now. He’s got the songs, the presence, and the ability to make thousands of people feel like they’re part of something special.
For anyone lucky enough to be there, this wasn’t just a great gig – it was a moment. The kind you look back on and say, “I was there.”
