Following their impressive debut EP Pop Culture in 2023, Birmingham-based indie rockers The Clause return with Weekend Millionaire, a five-track exploration of growing up, grappling with identity, and navigating the emotional ups and downs of youth. Laden with anthemic choruses, the EP showcases their evolution as a band, honing their sound and lyrical depth while maintaining the energetic guitar-driven style that has won them fans nationwide.
The opening track, Weekend Millionaire, is nothing short of a triumph. Easily their best work to date in our opinion, it’s a high-octane blend of mid-2000s indie influences with a modern polish. The chorus is irresistible, designed to be belted out in packed venues, and its lyrical themes of youthful ambition paired with the anxiety of “falling behind” resonate strongly. It’s been on repeat since its release for a reason—this track is an instant indie classic and we cannot wait to sing the “oo-aah” in Birmingham this winter.
Fever Dream, already a fan favourite from live performances, proves to be the emotional centre piece of the EP. The combination of euphoric guitar riffs and synth-infused melodies, along with Pearce Macca’s raw and introspective lyrics, captures the feeling of wandering through life’s uncertainties with a reckless, almost hopeful abandon. The track’s rise to prominence at live shows, particularly during This Feeling by the Sea in Bridlington where we last saw it, shows its potential to become a festival anthem for the band.
Bang in the centre of the EP is Take Me Home, a quintessential Clause track that ties together the familiar elements of their sound with the EP’s explorative spirit. Recognisable and comforting, it serves as a reminder of their roots while showcasing their ability to blend their evolving musical style with the influences that defined their earlier work.
The EP also introduces two new sounds with Stop the World and Never Ending Affair. Stop the World is a catchy, upbeat tune with a strong chorus, though it feels more like a bonus track than a future setlist staple. Lyrically sharp and enjoyable, it’s a song that will likely grow on listeners over time. Never Ending Affair, on the other hand, stands out with its acoustic pop vibe, a reflective moment in the EP’s line-up. Its singalong potential is high, and it’s easy to imagine this track becoming a fan favourite in intimate settings, contrasting the band’s usual high-energy approach.
Weekend Millionaire feels like the band’s coming-of-age project, a collection of tracks that speaks to the challenges of growing up while navigating the pressures of modern life. It’s a battle cry for the underdog, a reminder to live in the moment and find joy in the chaos. With a headline tour looming and new milestones ahead, this EP solidifies The Clause’s place as one of the most exciting rising bands in the UK indie scene.
